7th Annual Vet's with Nets Event Honors Military Heroes on Lake Erie

June 7th 2025, Lake Erie Fishing Report

Hard to believe 2025 marked the 7th Annual Vets with Nets. We've been fortunate to be part of this event over the years, and it's truly one of the most meaningful days we've spent on the western basin of Lake Erie.

From Humble Beginnings to a Massive Community Event

It's an event to honor and show appreciation for our active-duty military and veterans by offering world-class walleye fishing experiences on the western basin of Lake Erie.

What started back in 2019 with just a handful of boats turned into something incredible – over 150 boats and 400+ veterans came together in 2024. It was more than just a fishing trip... it was a way to give back, share stories, and say thank you to those who've served.

More Than Just Fishing: Building Community Connections

The event facilitates more than just a great day on the water – as volunteer captains we aim to provide our assigned veterans with a meaningful, memorable experience that renews their sense of pride in their service, inspires hope for the future, and strengthens their connection in the community they call home.

Remembering WWII Veteran Richard "Pops" Pastula

In 2024, we had the privilege of welcoming Richard "Pops" Pastula aboard – a WWII veteran born in 1927. Joined by his daughter Louise, we spent a memorable morning together fishing for walleye on Lake Erie. The lake wasn't exactly calm that day, but you wouldn't have known it by the smile on Pops' face. It was one of those moments that stays with you.

A Legacy That Lives On

Pops passed away peacefully on January 5, 2025, at the age of 97. This year, we were honored to have Louise join us again. As we fished, we shared stories, remembered his warmth, his spirit, and the impact he had on everyone lucky enough to know him.

His presence is missed, but the memory of that day – and of Pops himself – continues to inspire all of us.

Community Support Makes It All Possible

Huge thanks to the Detroit Beach Boat Club, the volunteers, board members, fellow captains, and generous sponsors who made it all happen. This kind of community effort is what makes it all so special.

Already looking forward to doing it all again in 2026. 🇺🇸🎣
