Sometimes the best Lake Michigan fishing charters start with an unexpected twist. This recent Manistee salmon trip proved that karma on the water pays off in more ways than one, as a simple act of kindness from last season turned into an unforgettable family fishing adventure.

The Full-Circle Fishing Story
Last season at the Manistee public launch, a chance discovery of a lost wallet led to an unexpected friendship. After tracking down the owner, Autumn, through Facebook and returning her wallet, we exchanged fishing stories and contact information. Fast forward to this week: when their boat landed in the shop during their vacation, Autumn's family reached out to book a charter with us.
Early Morning Departure
At 4:30 AM, we departed from the slip with Autumn, her husband Frank, and their two kids, everyone eager for their first salmon charter experience. The beauty of a professional charter? No rigging, no stress, just pure fishing enjoyment as we handle all the technical details.
Hot Bite on Lake Michigan: Tactics That Worked
Lines hit the water before sunrise, and the action started quickly. The 300 copper line on the starboard side was first to fire, setting the tone for an exceptional morning on Lake Michigan.

Productive Diver Setup
The diver bite was exceptionally hot throughout the morning. Our most productive combinations included:
Kevin's Girlfriend flies behind flashers
Riverside flies paired with white Spin Doctors
Blue Bubble flies creating irresistible action
Pickled Sunshine flies consistently producing strikes
We ran high wire and braid divers set 150–170 feet back, and they delivered consistent action throughout the trip.
Perfect Conditions for Family Fishing
The King salmon bite maintained a steady pace, ideal for the kids to fight and land their fish without being overwhelmed. Both children successfully landed their first-ever King salmon, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Check out more success stories in our fishing gallery.
Successful Lake Michigan Salmon Techniques
For those planning their own Manistee salmon trips or looking to replicate our success, here are the specific tactics that produced results:
Depth and Speed Settings
Target Depth: 130–150 feet
Trolling Speed: 2.2–2.4 mph
Bait Selection and Presentation
Riggers: Started with spoons, later swapped some to plugs (spoons remained most productive)
Planer Boards: J-Plugs showed consistent action
Divers: Flasher and fly combinations dominated the bite
