Family Reunion Meets Lake Michigan Salmon Fishing
What happens when you combine a Michigan family reunion with a sunrise salmon charter? You get an unforgettable adventure packed with triple hookups, first-time catches, and memories that'll last a lifetime!
Our fishing adventure brought together family members from across Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula, all converging at the Riverside Motel & Marina. After settling in and recharging with power naps, we kicked off the evening Michigan-style with Big Al's Pizza. Under the starlit sky, we shared stories, laughed until our sides hurt, and built anticipation for the next morning's Lake Michigan fishing charter.

Pre-Dawn Launch: The Perfect Start
4:30 AM Departure - Ideal Salmon Conditions
Tuesday morning came fast. At 4:30 AM sharp, our crew buzzed with excitement as we departed the dock. The lake conditions were perfect - calm waters, dark skies awaiting sunrise, and that electric anticipation only anglers understand. We motored several miles offshore to our target zone and deployed our spread:
J-plugs on planer boards
Copper lines at various depths
Moonshine spoons on downriggers
Triple Hookup Mayhem: When Lake Michigan Salmon Attack
Just before dawn, the action exploded. BAM! The port side 10-color lead core rod screamed with a white glow j-plug getting hammered. Within seconds, the 300 copper line fired off with a green dot glow plug, followed immediately by a Wonderbread glow Moonshine spoon down 70 feet on the starboard rigger. Triple hookup before 5:30 AM!
The deck erupted in controlled chaos - nets flying, drags singing, and cheers echoing across the water. By 5:30 AM, we had three beautiful salmon flopping on deck. This is why early morning fishing on Lake Michigan delivers such incredible results!

First-Timer Success: Tristan's Trophy King Salmon
The morning's highlight? Young Tristan landing his very first fish - an impressive 18-pound King Salmon! The pure joy on his face captured everything we love about introducing new anglers to Lake Michigan's world-class fishery. That's a core memory and instant bragging rights rolled into one!
Our Winning Lake Michigan Salmon Setup
As the sun climbed higher, the bite continued. Every strike brought celebration, high-fives, and good-natured ribbing (especially for the ones that got away). Here's exactly what worked for us:
Proven Salmon Fishing Techniques:
Target Depth: 100-130 feet of water
Trolling Speed: 2.2 MPH
Hot Lures: J-Plugs on planer boards, spoons on downriggers, flasher/fly combos on divers
Key Colors: White glow, green dot glow, Wonderbread patterns
Best Time: Pre-dawn to early morning
Why This Lake Michigan Trip Succeeded
Our setup was dialed in perfectly for summer salmon. The combination of various presentations at multiple depths created an irresistible spread that Lake Michigan Kings couldn't refuse. Running copper lines, lead core, and downriggers simultaneously allowed us to cover the entire water column effectively.
The early morning timing proved crucial - salmon were actively feeding in the pre-dawn darkness, and our glow patterns triggered aggressive strikes in low-light conditions.
